How Much Money Does Wic Give You

I was watching "Mamma Mia" last night (it seems there was a sporting event of some kind taking up the airwaves...) and I was singing along at the top of my lungs with Meryl Streep and ABBA:

I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay

Ain't it sad?

And still there never seems to be a single penny left for me

That's too bad.

Oh yeah, Meryl and I were in fine voice, let me tell you. It felt especially on target after shelling out for a new tire this weekend, and a long-overdue oil change. The tire situation was getting critical - I was having to air the thing up every three days and I was just waiting for it to blow while I had the kids in the car on an icy road or in negative degree weather. The tire on the other side blew out last month (leaving me stranded on the side of the road for 3 hours on my way to work) and when it got replaced, the technician recommended I replace the other one since it was in bad shape, as well. I finally got a payday, and less than two days later, I'm back to broke again, after taking care of the car and paying the more pressing bills that were due.

And so goes the life of a single working mom....always just scraping by and praying that another calamity doesn't hit before payday. I am good and tired of it, too. Right now, this is how it is for me and until the divorce is set in stone, that's not likely to change. Even after that, it's not likely to change much more. I think I need some extra help.

I'm considering going to a non-profit debt counselor - there's an excellent one in my area (no fees charged) and they've been recommended to me. Maybe they can help me identify some extra ways to trim my budget even more.

Have any of you used a debt counselor? Was it a good idea? Or not worth the effort?
