Love this series

Love this series. Beautifully done and beautifully casted and acted. It's wonderful to see the roles filled with actors who can handle the language. I get frustrated seeing some of the 1 and 2 star reviews where they criticize the film's because they don't like Shakespeare or don't understand the language. Really? Why bother watching the series then in the first place? And then to take the time to blast it in a review because it's Shakespeare? Yes these films are Shakespeare plays. They are not watered down teenage modern adaptations loosely based on the plot.

What's to say?

I mean... C'mon?! Jeremy Irons, Tom Hiddleston, and Ben Whishaw...?! Amazing actors all. If you're any kind of Shakespeare fan, you'll love it. I even managed to get my teenage boys to watch because they can see the action rather than reading it in class. (Because really, these were dramatic plays presented to a largely illiterate audience. They were meant to be shown, not read!) With a little help in translation from mom, they're not so dismissive of Shakespeare and his archaic language anymore, and I've even heard them talking to their friends about it. Well... that... and the themes are about betrayal/treason and war, so what teenage boys DON'T like swords, armor, banishment, and court intrigue?! Also... I'm fairly certain girls will enjoy it too. I know I do!

Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, and many other actors at their finest!

It will be difficult to put into words how much I love this Hollow Crown series. I have watched it so many times, I've lost count. To date, it is without a doubt the finest and highest quality Shakespearean performance effort ever made! Exquisite acting, robust sets and costumes, well-researched portrayals, and a soundtrack by Stephen Warbeck to die for -- The Hollow Crown series I is truly a masterpiece! The many faceted characters are revealed in clever detail -- I will never look at Falstaff, Doll Tearsheet, Silence, Poins, Bardolph, Pistol, King Henry IV, King Henry V, Lords Exeter, Westmoreland, Mistress Quickly or John of Gaunt ever the same again. The actors breathe new life into characters I have never considered very seriously before. This is the first time I regarded Falstaff as not just a comical character, but a conflicted, sad, shallow man. No other performance has helped me to see and understand the characters better. Shakespeare gives us the words, but the actors/director/screenplay writer have helped enrich the character development so much! I wish every kid in high school would watch these plays when they are taught Shakespeare; there is nothing onerous or boring about it, and you would have to be a stone to not revel in the victory at Agincourt, and take courage from the St. Crispian's Day speech. The courtship scene between Katherine and Prince Hal is delightful and fresh, and even the exchanges between the French Herald and Prince Hal are poignant and meaningful. Well worth your time -- I purchased the DVD set and the movies on Amazon Prime as well; it's that good! I'm so glad to see that Great Britain can still create epic, sweeping, gorgeous, moving productions!

Natural style of acting makes understanding easier for the layman.

Natural style of acting makes understanding easier for the layman.
The unique vocabulary can be easily discerned by context, action, props, and tone.
A lot of times, filmed Shakespearean dramas are still performed by the actors as if trying to project the back row of the theater.
Highly recommend the series!
No bombastic overacting that actually clouds motivation, rather than reveal.
Educators, this series, both 1 & 2, are perfect students new to these plays!

Near Perfection

If you appreciate Shakespeare minus the pretention, acting at its very finest, and deft direction and camerawork, you'll be absolutely delighted by this series. Yes, they do take a few liberties with the scripts, deleting sections presumably deemed to be superfluous for modern audiences (or merely too lengthy and not central to the main themes), but in general the excisions are judicious. All in all, this is a real treat and you'll likely want to watch it over and over again.

Authentic Shakespeare

Compra verificada

It's true Shakespeare (no modernization or cultural changes). Seeing in real historical settings (landscapes) instead of onstage made the stories more powerful. Acting was superb. Just keep in mind that Shakespeare was not always historically accurate himself, so don't rely on this to teach true history. Season 2 has Richard III portrayed more grotesquely than any other version. A great performance by Benedict Cumberbatch, but seemed to go even beyond Shakespeare's villainizing of the king. A great watch for anyone who likes Shakespeare, or those required to watch his works.

Must see both seasons in order - highly recommended!

I absolutely LOVED this series. I missed it the first time around but watched it recently before I watched the second season, recently released. I enjoy Shakespeare, but the language takes a little time to find it's rhythm in my brain. I had no issues with understanding this, thanks to both the actors and accompanying action. I was very engrossed in all episodes but was completely entranced by Benedict Cumberbatch's Richard III, a truly evil man. Highly recommended for wonderful acting quality, great battle scenes, superb sets and of course, it is Shakespeare! What's not to love?

History andf Shakespeare Perfection

Compra verificada

This was utterly enjoyable, and a wonderful way to enjoy history and Shakespeare at the same time. The overall production value of the plays was wonderful, and the casting was perfect. Rory Kinnear as young Henry IV in "Richard II" was masterful. I finished all four episodes in one week-end, and look forward the Season 2 for next week-end.
